Disabled Professor Saibaba Gets Life Imprisonment For Maoist Links
Delhi University's professor GN Saibaba and five others have been sentenced by Gadchiroli principal district and sessions court to life imprisonment for their links with the outlawed Maoists and for plotting against India. Among the sentenced are JNU student Hem Mishra and journalist Prashant Rahi.
Gadchiroli principal district and sessions court Judge SS Shinde convicted them under sections 13, 18, 20, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The Maharashtra Police had arrested Saibaba, an English language faculty of the Ram Lal College in May 2014 on charges of having links with the banned Maoists. He has later been suspended from the college. Currently, he is out of bail.
Earlier in the day, public prosecutor (PP) Prashant Sathianathan argued that handicap did not prevent Saibaba from aiding and abetting violence against the state, so he shold not be given any relief. He demanded life imprisonment for the professor.
