This Hyderabadi’s Resolve Has Saved 107 Lives From Drowning In Tank Bund

Hyderabad: A personal tragedy turned into a resolve to save lives for a man whose brother died due to accidental drowning in Hyderabad's Asmanpet lake.

When Shiva was 12, his brother had died drowning in the lake. It was then he had resolved to work as a lifeguard and save as many lives as he could.

The life-saver has till date saved 107 lives by jumping into the water, without any safety gear, and bringing them out.

"Mahendra was the only one I had, the one whom I could call family. I don't want anyone else to go through the pain I once felt," said Shiva.

"I used to live in an orphanage with my brother. When he drowned, I went to recover his dead body from Asmanpet lake and decided to live around Tank Bund. I started rescuing people who tried to commit suicide by jumping into the water," Shiva said.

Although Shiva regularly takes it on him to save lives, he works without safety gears, but says that he can work more efficiently if those equipment are provided to him.

Recounting hazards, he said once an iron rod had pierced into his chest and shoulder while saving a drowning woman. Not just that, due to the water in Tank Bund lake, he has been infected too several times.

Talking about his generous help, police officer Viswa Prasad that no one except for Shiva has come forward to help.

The officer has also written a letter the Director of Telangana Social Welfare Educational Institution Society Praveen Kumar, asking him to admit Shiva's children in school.

"Government should come forward to help him. We are also going to approach Hyderabad Collector to help him in any manner possible," the officer added.
