Is YV Subba Reddy Really A Christian? Find Out The Truth

A controversy has erupted regarding the newly-appointed chairman of the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanams (TTD) Trust Board, YV Subba Reddy over his religion. Following the decision made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to appoint Subba Reddy as the chairman of the TTD board, posts on social media claimed that he is a “Christian convert”.

The posts claimed that the move to appoint YV Subba Reddy as TTD Board Chairman is a ploy by Jagan Mohan to “bring in more Christians”.

Even the Wikipedia page of YV Subba Reddy kept changing. Earlier, the page included only three lines on the YSRCP leader but on June 6, multiple users changed details about him with the religion changing to Christian and then to Hindu repeatedly.

Academic Madhu Kishwar tagged the Home Minister’s office on Twitter questioning the appointment.

When questioned on these claims, YV Subba Reddy denied the allegations and was quoted saying to a news agency, “I am a devout Hindu. These people are spreading false and malicious rumours about me. My whole family is Hindu including my father and mother, my wife and my children. We are all practicing Hindus.”

Stating that these rumours are an attempt to malign his image and YS Jagan's reputation, YV Subba Reddy said that he visits Shirdi every few months and Sabarimala every year adding that his entire family prays to Hindu Gods.

He also questioned as to how the people who don't know him are casting such doubts on his religion. He is YS Jagan's maternal uncle and as per the election affidavit, his full name is mentioned as Yarram Venkata Subba Reddy.

The former MP also stated the same in an interview with TV9 Telugu published on June 6 reiterating that he was and will always remain a Hindu.

The issue surrounding Subba Reddy's religion is speculated to have kicked off as YS Jagan’s grandfather YS Venkat Reddy converted to Christianity, followed by father YSR Reddy. So, it was brought under the assumption that Subba Reddy also converted to Christianity, however, Subba Reddy belongs to YS Jagan’s mother’s side. She followed the Hindu religion till she married YSR Reddy and only after marriage, converted to Christianity, which clearly indicates that her family including her parents, siblings, cousins are Hindus.
