Delhi NCR: Several regions in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced rainfall on Sunday, December 8, offering some respite from the persistent pollution and poor air quality that has plagued the area. On the same day, the city's air quality deteriorated to the 'very poor' category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 302, after having briefly improved to the 'moderate' range earlier in December.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light showers or drizzle in specific areas of Delhi, including Indira Gandhi International Airport, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Kalkaji, Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Aya Nagar, and Deramandi. Additionally, other NCR regions such as Noida, Gurugram, Manesar, and Farukhnagar in Haryana are likely to see mild rainfall by Monday evening. The IMD has also forecast foggy conditions for the upcoming day.
According to Naresh Kumar, a scientist at IMD, a western disturbance over central Pakistan and its vicinity is influencing weather patterns, bringing light to moderate rain to the Himalayan region over the next couple of days. Rain is expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi as a result. Kumar added that temperatures in Delhi-NCR and Haryana may rise briefly on December 8, but they are forecasted to drop significantly after December 9, with a cold wave expected to impact Rajasthan first, followed by Punjab and Haryana.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) categorizes air quality as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and above 400 (severe). As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, Delhi's AQI stood at 302, indicating very poor air quality.
In related news, an official from the Commission for Air Quality Management stated that an evaluation committee found issues with the data accuracy and the emissions inventory used in the air quality model. Some data was also noted to be outdated.
