Bid Goodbye to Summer Heat As Monsoon To Arrive On June 6

New Delhi: As heat wave conditions intensified across the country, the India Meteorological Department on Saturday said monsoon will arrive on the southern coast on June 6. The monsoon usually reaches the southern tip of Kerala around June 1.

“At present, monsoon has covered some extreme southern part of Arabian Sea and parts of southwest-southeast-east central Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman Nicobar islands,” M Mohapatra, IMD’s director general of meteorology, told a leading news agency.

“In the next two to three days, it will cover more parts of the Arabian Sea," he added.

On Friday, IMD predicted that monsoon is supposed to be normal this year with 96 per cent of the Long Period Average. The LPA is the average rainfall received by the entire country during the southwest monsoon, from June to September between the years 1951 and 2000. It is pegged at 89 cm.

In the next three to five days, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms over northeastern states and extreme southern peninsula.

"As per our forecast, the maximum temperature can be as high as 46 degrees. It will gradually come down,” Mohapatra had said.
