When Facebook Friend Turns Killer

Mumbai: A 20-year-old girl was found dead near an apartment staircase in Alkapuri locality at Nalasopara east in the city.

According to reports, the girl Ankita More, a resident of Vashi befriended a 25-year-old Haridas Nirgude of Nalasopara on Facebook. The duo regularly chatted with each other and decided to meet at his flat in Alkapuri. Ankita went to his flat around 7.15 pm on Sunday. After a talk between them, the Facebook friend Haridas forced the girl to get physical with him.

Ankita refused and wanted to leave the flat. But the accused strangled her to death with shoe lace and left her on the staircase of his apartment.

A resident of the same building found the girl lying on the stairs and informed the police. The police rushed to the spot and shifted the girl to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead. "I thought the girl has fainted and informed the police," the resident said.

Meanwhile some residents told the police that the girl was seen visiting a flat on the ground floor. After a brief inquiry, the police said that the girl visited her Facebook friend Nirude's place without informing her parents. They also recovered the girl's wallet and phone from his flat.

The police took Haridas Nirude into custody. They also sent the victim's body for post-mortem to examine if the girl was sexually assaulted before death as some bloodstains were found inside the flat.
