GHMC goes aggressive with demolition drive after under-construction building collapse

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) undertook a demolition drive on Thursday following the collapse of under-construction building at Film Nagar on July 24.

Many builders use inferior quality material because it comes cheaper. The local municipal body is supposed to conduct tests on the concrete, cement and the method of construction

“So far 10 dilapidated structures have been taken down and will continue till the structures are demolished or the building be rectified by the owners,” the official said.

Experts blame negligence on GHMC officials, while the civic body blames the impediment on contractors for using low-grade materials in the construction of building.

In the last six years over 1,400 buildings got collapsed.

Meanwhile, an officer from the town planning justified saying that on an issuance of structural stability certificates, a structural engineer is sent but since there are handful of such engineers certain things could get overlooked.

Ironically, in the last six years over 1,400 buildings got collapsed.
