Hyderabad: Former minister, senior Telugu Desam Party leader and five-time MLA from Kankipadu in Krishna district Devineni Rajasekhar alias Nehru died here on Monday morning. He was undergoing treatment at Care hospital in Banjara Hills for over a week and breathed his last after his condition deteriorated at around 5am.

Born on 22 June 1954 in Vijayawada, Devineni was a farmer before he joined TDP at its inception in 1983 and got elected in 1983, 1985,1989,1994 and 2004 from Kankipadu Assembly constituency. Rajasekhar served as a minister during 1994–96 in the cabinet of NT Rama Rao. Later joined Congress, Devineni also served as a minister in the first cabinet of late Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhar Reddy.

A BA graduate, Devineni was a strong leader in Krishna district and influenced the political scenario in some degree or the other during the past 35 years. He is survived by son Avinash and a daughter. After a long association with TDP, Devineni had joined Congress but returned to his parent party recently.

Devineni Nehru's body is being shifted to Vijayawada and the funeral may take place on Tuesday.
