Eight Killed In Chennai Accident
Chennai: Eight people including woman and children killed on the spot in an accident at Chennai. The victims Subramanian, Jayalakshmi, Balamurugan, Kavitha, Vijaya Raghavan, Gomati, Bhagya Lakshmi and Manjunath are from Medavakkam, Chennai. On Saturday night, they started from Chennai to reach Samayapuram to see their relative's new house. They also prepared to visit nearby temples. 13 members started from the Chennai in an SUV (Scorpio) driven by one Bala Murugan.
In the early hours of Sunday, around 4:20 AM, the car was close to the Samayapuram tollgate, when the speeding vehicle rammed into a lorry parked on the road. The driver may not have noticed the truck carrying iron rods, parked on the road and low visibility could also be one of the causes of the tragedy, it is being said. When the car hit the lorry, the tollgate staff heard a huge sound and soon rushed to the spot. Those sitting in the front two seats died instantly.
The firefighters of Samayapuram learned of the accident and reached the spot. They rescued five members including a child all of whom were in the back seats and sent them to a nearby hospital. They had to extricate the dead bodies out of the car by cutting the doors and glasses. In the accident, Subramanian (60), Jayalakshmi (58), Bala Murugan (46), his son Kanda Swamy (10), Vijaya Raghavan (43), his wife (40), Manjunathan (40) his daughter Nivetha (11) died on the spot.
A two-year-old girl escaped with no injuries but was in a state of shock. The accident resulted in a massive traffic jam on the national highway for three hours. The lorry driver went absconding and the police started probing the case.
