Woman Who Was Raped In Broad Daylight Was Deprived Of Food, Shelter For Days
Visakhapatnam: The gory rape incident on a footpath by a 23-year-old drunken youth has raised the issue of women's safety in the port city and has created ripples across the country. The victim, who came out from her house following a dispute with her family members, was lying starved on the footpath under a tree near Thatichetlapalem-Railway Station Road.
Noticing her sleeping, the accused, Ganji Shiva, forced himself onto her as passersby were watching without doing anything to stop him. As she was weak and in a near-unconscious state after being deprived of food for days, she didn't have the strength to resist the rapist.
An autorickshaw driver, RG Srinivas, filmed the incident on his mobile phone and called the police. The police rushed to the spot and rescued the 45-year-old victim and arrested the accused. The victim was immediately rushed to King George Hospital where her condition was stated to be stable. The accused, who was drunk, works as a lorry cleaner. According to the police, Siva was a former offender involved in petty cases in the city. A case under Section 376 was registered against him and the accused was produced in the court on Monday. He was remanded to judicial custody for two weeks.
