Woman Commits Suicide With Rs55 Lakh Abolished Notes In Hand
Hyderabad: A woman who recently sold a piece of land by accepting all cash in Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes committed suicide thinking the money became valueless after the abolition of high value notes in Shenagapuram village in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana on Thursday.
Kandukuri Vinoda (55) sold her land for Rs56.40 lakh recently as she needed money for her husband's medical treatment. She spent around Rs2.00 lakh on the treatment and the remaining amount was in cash as it is a common practice in rural areas. People don't operate bank accounts fearing that they will have to pay tax if the amounts are deposited in banks.
Vinoda was shocked after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the abolition of Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes on Tuesday night. Her sons also admonished her for making the transaction despite their advice. She took the PM's words that "all the cash in these denominations is no longer a legal tender," and upset with the developments at home, she hanged herself at night after all family members were asleep.
Police are investigating the case.
