Well dressed thieves target marriage ceremony, make off with valuables

Phagwara: Two persons, including a girl, posing as guests at in a wedding ceremony, made off with the purse of the groom’s mother containing cash and other valuables worth lakhs of rupees here, police said on Monday.
The culprits, well-dressed, took part in the ‘milni’, had breakfast and sat behind the groom’s mother, Pinder Chopra, during the ‘lavan’ ceremony at a shrine on Sunday.
As the victim’s attention was towards the ceremony, the girl and her male accomplice made off with her purse, police said, adding that they were going through CCTV footage to get more details about the culprits.
The purse stolen also had the ‘mangalsutra’, police said, adding that since it was a Sunday, all shops were closed and a new one could not be bought or arranged. Thus, the marriage had to be performed without following the custom of the groom tying the ‘mangalsutra’ around the neck of the bride.
The purse also had Rs 55,000 cash, an unknown amount of cash received in ‘shagun’, gold jewellery weighing five tolas, and a mobile phone, police said.
