Unmanned railway crossings - potential death traps
There are over 15000 unmanned level-crossings in the country and they remain death traps for the vehicles.
Major mishaps occurred due to the neglect of the road users and drivers. Here are some major train accidents in the country in recent times:
May 19, 2014: UP Minister Satai Ram Yadav and two others died in a mishap at unmanned level-crossing in Khalsaha in UP.
May 9, 2014: Train, jeep ram at a level-crossing in Gorakhpur, 13 of a wedding party die.
September 26, 2012: College bus rams into speeding Howrah-KG Gudam Bagh Express in Bihar's Siwan, 9 engineering students killed, angry locals set the trian on fire.
20 March 2012 : 15 people were killed when a train collided with an overcrowded taxi minivan at an unmanned railroad crossing in northern Uttar Pradesh state, Mahamaya Nagar district, 296 kilometres from state capital Lucknow
February 3, 2012: Three killed, 50 hurt as earth-cutting vehicle hits train in Kamrup district.
19 December 2012: Indore Yeshwantpur Exp Met an Accident at Medak District near Sankhapur. Accident occurred by hitting a lorry to 300mts. Many were injured.
7 July 2011: A Mathura Chhapra Express train rams into a bus carrying wedding guests around 2 a.m. at an unmanned railway crossing in Thanagaon, Kanshiram Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, killing 38 and injuring 30.
