Press Council Warns Andhra Pradesh Police

Sakshi daily had last year several irregularities in the land pooling system for the new capital city.

Hyderabad: Press Council of India (PCI) has warned the Andhra Pradesh police over its failure to appear before the PCI in the complaint filed by Indian Journalists' Union.

Sakshi daily had last year published irregularities in the land pooling system for the new capital city of AP. The AP police had issued summons to journalists of Sakshi daily for the publication. "The issue of summons by the police is a breach of press freedom," Indian Journalists' Union (IJU) general secretary Devulapalli Amar said and filed a complaint with the PCI. Since last year the PCI issued three summons to the AP police with the third hearing scheduled for Monday - February 6. On all the three occasions representatives of the AP police failed to appear before the PCI following which PCI Chairman Justice CK Prasad warned the police that the repeated failure to appear before the Council will have serious repercussions.

Meanwhile, a fresh complaint has been lodged with the PCI against TDP MLA Amanchi Krishnamohan for assaulting journalist Nagarjuna Reddy in Chirala on Sunday.
