Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail works will be completed along the previously decided alignment routes in the old city by 2020, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said.

Replying to a question in the state Assembly, on Wednesday, he made the statement rekindling hopes of a metro line in the old city. The proposed route was set to begin from JBS in Secunderabad and end at Falaknuma palace. However, the metro works are in the final stages of completion only upto Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), which is approximately 10 kilometers from JBS. The CM's announcement will ensure the completion of the reminder of the route beginning from MGBS to Falaknuma which is 5.3 kilometers. That would have stations at MGBS, Salarjung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, Shamsher Gunj, Jungametta and Falaknuma. The 5.3 kilometers stretch has over 1,000 properties and 50 religious structures. According to Metro Rail authorities, if the properties are acquired without hassles, the metro rail will be operational in the old city by 2020.
