Calcutta High Court Fines BCCI Chief Sourav Ganguly: Deets Inside

The Calcutta High Court has rejected Sourav Ganguly's allocation of a site for the establishment of an educational institution. The two-judge panel of Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arijit Banerjee issued a Rs 50,000 penalty each on West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and the state government, as well as a Rs 10,000 penalty on Ganguly and his foundation.

The court observed that HIDCO and the West Bengal state Cabinet did not investigate bona fides during the distribution procedure and that the land was granted with "closed eyes," as if it were not declared property but a private limited business.

The petitioner informed the High Court that, in response to the Supreme Court’s decision, Ganguly asked West Bengal's Chief Minister in July 2012 to grant a 2.5-acre property in Kolkata for the construction of an international school. The petition accused the state government of favoritism since the lease premium owed by Sourav Ganguly was reduced from Rs. 10.98 crores to Rs. 5.27 crores.
