Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani Re-Arrested Soon After Getting Bail from Assam Court

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani re-arrested by Assam police -Sakshi Post

Guwahati: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was re-arrested in a new case on Monday evening a few hours after he was granted bail by a court in Assam. He was first arrested on Thursday from Gujarat’s Palanpur by the Assam police for posting a tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a local BJP leader from Assam’s Kokrajhar filed a complaint against him.

The court had reserved its order on the bail plea in the tweets on PM Modi. As per reports, recently a woman police officer had accused Mevani of molestation and assault and a case was filed against him.

The Gujarat legislator, supported by Congress, was re-arrested by the Barpeta police. The police had charged him under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to voluntarily causing hurt and stopping a government officer from discharging his or her duty.

According to the FIR filed against Mevani for “molestation and assault” in Barpeta Road police station, the incident occured when a woman police officer was escorting him from Gujarat airport to Kokrajhar along with Additional Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh Panesar and another police officer in a government vehicle on April 21.

As per the FIR, Mevani used abusive language against the woman police officer inside the police vehicle. When she “asked him to behave”, the Gujarat legislator got agitated and “used more slang words, tried to frighten me and pushed me on my seat with force. He thus assaulted me during the execution of my duty as a public servant and outraged my modesty by touching me inappropriately while pushing".

Mevani has denied these allegations while accusing the BJP and RSS of hatching a conspiracy to tarnish his image and systematically destroy him.

“It is a conspiracy by the BJP and the RSS. They did this to tarnish my image. They have been doing this systematically. They did it to Rohit Vemula, they did it to Chandrasekhar Azad, now they are targeting me,” Mevani told reporters on Monday.
