Assam: Female Student Denied Entry Into Exam Hall For Wearing Shorts

A 19-year-old student was denied entry into an exam hall for wearing shorts. The incident took place in Tezpur town of Assam. Jublee Tamuli along with her father travelled from Biswanath Chariali to Tezpur for the entrance exam of Jorhat’s Assam Agricultural University (AAU).

According to Jublee, she was not allowed into the exam centre - Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (GIPS).

Speaking to a news website, Jublee said that, "I was stopped by the invigilator at the exam hall. He said I would not be allowed to enter wearing shorts." She also said that nothing related to dress code was mentioned in the admit card.

She stated that she appeared for the NEET exam in the same town, wearing the exact same attire, and didn't face any problem. She asserted that "Neither does the AAU have any rules about shorts nor was there anything mentioned in the admit card. How was I to know?”

She added that "I went crying to my father who was waiting outside. Finally, the Controller of Exams said I could take the exam if a pair of pants could be arranged. So my father rushed to the market to buy a pair."

Jublee said that the management didn't check for COVID protocols, maks, or even temperature but checked for shorts.

The controller of Exams told Jublee that she can write an exam if a pair of pants could be arranged for her. Then her father rushed to a market to get the pants, while her father was away, the authorities decided to give her curtains to cover her legs. 

Jublee said that it was the most humiliating experience of her life and wants to write on this to Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
