According to statistics, there are 77 million diabetic patients in India, and these are just reported numbers. What do you have to say about the people who wish to ignore the signs?

Yes, diabetes is a major health concern around the world – especially in India where more than 77 million people are diabetic. It is also estimated that around 1 in 4 people with diabetes in India are undiagnosed. This highlights the need to create awareness around the signs and symptoms of diabetes, so that people can be diagnosed and treated earlier. Abbott, through its various initiatives, is committed to raising awareness around the prevalence of diabetes and highlighting the need for right nutrition for managing the condition. It is important people initiate early interventions such as lifestyle management including right nutrition and physical exercise to manage the condition better.

In the USA, people with health issues gladly volunteer to join prevention programs. What’s the scene like in India?

In India, there is still a huge load of non-communicable diseases including diabetes. Managing these take a huge toll on the healthcare system and society at large. With increasing awareness situation should improve over a period as more and more people understand the importance of adapting a healthy lifestyle at an early stage to prevent or delay the onset of non-communicable diseases.

People find it hard to remove certain foods from their diet, even if it affects their health. Do you think that this is one of the reasons why diabetes is on the rise?

Yes, poor dietary choices are one of the major risk factors for diabetes. Consumption of foods that are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats lead to obesity, which in turn increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While it can be difficult for people to make changes to their diet, it is important to remember that small changes can have a huge, lasting impact on overall health. For example, reducing the intake of sugary drinks and snacks, increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, and choosing whole grains over refined carbohydrates can all help reduce the risk of diabetes. It is also important to note that diabetes management is not just about removing certain foods from the diet, but is also about balancing the intake of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to help manage blood sugar levels.

Tell us about the Transcultural Diabetes Nutrition Algorithm (tDNA)?

Transcultural Diabetes Nutrition Algorithm (tDNA) is a new-age tool introduced to aid in providing nutrition therapy to people with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes in diverse cultural and geographical settings. The objective is to increase awareness on the benefits of nutritional interventions for people with diabetes and encourage healthy eating practices.

What part does nutrition play in diabetes management?

Nutrition plays a crucial role in diabetes management. A balanced diet that is rich in nutrients, low in unhealthy fats and sugar, and high in fiber can help manage blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. In fact, today there are diabetic specific nutrition supplements (DSNS) available that can help manage blood glucose levels and support weight management. It is imperative for individuals with diabetes to work with a registered dietitian or a healthcare professional to develop a meal plan that is tailored to their individual needs. The rightmeal plan can help control blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve overall health and well-being.

What is the reason behind India having the 2nd highest population with diabetes?

The dramatic rise of diabetes prevalence in India is largely due tothe rapid changes in demographic, socioeconomic, and nutritional factors. Coupled with this, a predominantly sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity and other diet-related noncommunicable diseases. The Indian diet is also heavy on carbohydrates, fats, and sugar which add to the burden.
