Success Profile of Supriya Deverkonda for Mothers Day
With mother's day around the corner, I could not miss the opportunity to share an inspiring story with you that would be of great interest to your readers. I would love to arrange an interaction with Supriya Deverkonda, a working mother in tech from Gurgaon who defied cultural stereotypes around work, traditional family, and marriage by adopting a 5-month-old baby in 2013. She has since been navigating bureaucratic hurdles and skepticism to raise her child and build a successful career in the tech industry but wouldn't have it any other way. We believe her story would be of great interest to your readers.
Supriya’s story in her words:
"India is a beautiful country with a rich culture and has made significant progress, but it still clings to a few stringent norms, especially when it comes to women. Despite this, In 2013, I made the life-changing decision to adopt a 5-month-old baby, defying cultural stereotypes around traditional family and marriage. Eight years on, I am still having to deal with bureaucratic hurdles and scepticism, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Being a mother is a beautiful journey in itself, especially when my child comes to me after a tiring office day and gives me a big hug and a smile. It's the most amazing thing. The best thing about being a single parent is that it has taught me to stand up for what is not right, to stand up to society and have the courage to say no.
In India, there is a strong norm of marrying first and then having a child, and I did venture on that journey, but it was not for me. I challenged that norm when I realized that being a wife and a mother are not mutually exclusive. And when I thought about re-entering the workforce and trying to balance being a working mom and a good mom, it dawned on me that if I could challenge the norm by being a single mother, I could also take on being a working one.
To pursue my career aspirations, I decided to take The Post Graduate Program in Artificial Intelligence for Leaders by Great Learning this year. It has enabled me to launch my career in the tech industry without second-guessing myself, and I haven't looked back since."
Supriya’s journey is a testament to the joys and challenges of being a working mother and the strength and determination required to challenge societal norms and pursue a fulfilling life. It also highlights the importance of gender diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, where women are still underrepresented in leadership positions.
Supriya’s story is sure to inspire other women who are juggling the responsibilities of motherhood and their careers to pursue their passions, upskill themselves, and most importantly, stop second guessing themselves and reclaim their careers.
