Have Experienced Racial Remarks Towards Me Because I Am Black: Chris Gayle
NEW DELHI: West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle on Monday said that racism exists not just in football but cricket too. His remarks comes in the backdrop of the custodial killing of African-American George Floyd, a 46-year-old man who was pinned to the ground in Minneapolis by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on his neck as he gasped for breath last Monday.
'Black Lives Matter' protests have engulfed the United States over the killing.
"Black lives matter just like any other life. Black people matter, p***k all racist people, stop taking black people for fools, even our own black people wise the p***k up and stop bringing down your own! I have travelled the globe and experience racial remarks towards me because I am black, believe me, the list goes on," Gayle wrote in his Instagram story.
"Racism is not only in football, it's in cricket too. Even within teams as a black man, I get the end of the stick. Black and powerful. Black and proud," he added.
At least five people have died and curfew has been placed in 40 US cities after the killing. Police have arrested at least 2,564 people in two dozen US cities over the weekend. Nearly a fifth of those arrests were in Los Angeles.
Considered to be the worst ever civil unrest in the US in decades, the violent protests have engulfed at least 140 cities across America in the days following the death of Floyd. Some of the protests have turned violent, prompting the activation of the National Guard in at least 20 states.
