VIJAYAWADA: Air India is planning to operate international flights from Gannavaram International Airport at Vijayawada. As part of this, Air India will launch direct flights to Muscat, the capital of Oman, from July 20. An extended runway is likely to come into operation from July 15 at , Vijayawada International Airport near Gannavaram.

 Air India is planning to run direct services between Muscat and Vijayawada once a week or thrice from the first week of July, and increase the services based on demand.

Airport director G Madhusudana Rao said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has expanded the 2,286-metre existing runway by another 1,074 metres, at an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore. The total length of the runway is now 3,360 m, and the width remains 45 m. AI Airbus A-321 departs from here every Tuesday at 12 noon and arrives in Muscat at 2 pm Oman time, according to Air India sources. The company has already announced the travel schedule for the service, which runs only once a week, and has resumed booking tickets.
