Andhra Braces for Flash Floods as Penna, Krishna Rivers Swell
Amaravati: Heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of Karnataka have resulted in flash floods in the Krishna and Penna basins. With inflow of water, the major rivers in Andhra Pradesh are in full spate.
Nearly 3.74 lakh cusecs of floodwater from the Pulichintala project downstream is being released in the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada. With the two major reservoirs Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar filled to the brim, over 3.67 lakh cusecs of surplus water is being discharged in river Krishna.
Currently, 1.93 lakh cusecs of floodwater is being let out from the Prakasam Barrage, however concerned officials said that the outflow could increase to four lakh cusecs because of the surplus discharge from Pulichintala project.
Meanwhile, State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) officials have asked the people living in the low-lying areas and staying along the river banks to remain cautious and not try to cross the streams at any point. While the fishermen were advised to not to venture into the sea for the next couple of the days in view of the inclement weather conditions.
Officials of NTR, Krishna and Guntur districts have also been kept on alert to take precautionary measures, particularly downstream the barrage, as the first warning signal is expected to be raised by Friday.

Similarly, the Penna river is also in spate, resulting in heavy discharges in Anantapuramu, Sri Satya Sai and YSR Kadapa districts. The Somasila reservoir on Penna river in SPS Nellore district is also filling up fast with an inflow of 11,893 cusecs of floodwater.

SDMA officials have said two teams of National Disaster Response Force have been sent to Anantapuramu district for undertaking rescue and relief operations where required.
