TDP, Opposition Parties To Skip Crucial All-party Meet on Simultaneous Polls
New Delhi: With several Opposition parties across the country viewing the conduct of simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and State Assemblies as merely related to an issue of BJP manifesto, many of them decided to stay away from the all-party meeting slated for today in the national capital.
Telugu Desam Party, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have already made their absence public. However, Aam Aadmi Party has decided to send its leader Raghav Chadha as its representative.
Although Congress has not yet made its mind whether or not to attend the meet, it is emerging that the party too will follow in the footsteps of TMC, TDP, and DMK.
On the other hand, the ruling parties in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have decided to attend the scheduled meet. TRS will be represented by its working president KT Rama Rao and YSRCP by its president and Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banarjee said it would be better if Centre first released a White Paper on the issue, held deliberations with experts and political parties before moving forward on the same. She has expressed these views to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahalad Joshi in bher letter recently.
In wake of rising election expenditure and constant elections creating a sort of "perpetual election mode" in the political circles hampering governance and development, the issue took centre stage. If the particular proposal finds the light of the day, it will result in conducting simultaneous elections to both State Assemblies and the Centre. As expected, the views on the proposal are wideranging cutting across various political parties.
