TIME has featured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on its cover. No, that's not news. What’s making news is their headline which reads—India's Divider In Chief! In its latest edition dated May 20, 2019 the TIME magazine has put Modi on their magazine cover and the report states that India is more divided than ever under PM Modi.
Of the great democracies to fall to populism, India was the first—the opening line of the article reads. Not wanting to let go of the opportunity, Congress swung into action to derive maximum mileage from the bad publicity caused by the article. In a tweet to PM Modi, the All India Mahila Congress posted the cover of the magazine with the message ‘Your truth is for all to see’.
The cover story is penned by Aatish Taseer and touches upon mob lynchings, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and the saffron party's decision to field Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur in Bhopal.
The TIME cover article has not spared the Opposition either. Taseer describes Rahul Gandhi as an unteachable mediocrity while adding that his part didn't have much to offer than the dynastic principle.
Interestingly, in the same issue, the magazine has also published another article with the headline "Modi is India's Best Hope for Economic Reform."
It now remains to be seen how much of an impact this article will have on the upcoming elections.
The article comes at a time when India's Lok Sabha Elections are all set to come to an end. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 23.
