Guntur: The Guntur Medical College professor Dr. Lakshmi was arrested in Bengaluru on Monday. She went underground after the PG medico Dr. B. Sandhya Rani committed suicide on October 27, accusing Lakshmi of harassment leading to her death.

Lakshmi was arrested along with her husband Parthasarathi, vice chairman, AP Medical Council. The couple was arrested minutes after Sakshi TV telecast a live program featuring Sandhya’s mother Pramila and brother Ravi Kumar and their lawyer who presented clear evidence to establish the torture meted out by Lakshmi to the deceased.

It may be recalled that Dr Sandhya Rani (27), a PG student of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, committed suicide by injecting an over dose of anesthesia to herself. In her suicide note, Sandhya stated that she was ending her life because of the inhuman treatment meted out to her by her professor Dr. Lakshmi. She was a native of Nalgonda district and secured a seat in the Department of Gynecology in 2014 and was about to complete her course in three months.

A committee inquired into the incident found Lakshmi guilty of harassing Sandhya. Dr. Kamineni Srinivas said last week that they had received the committee reports and officials have been directed to take action against the professor.

The Hyderabad High Court issued a directive to the police to make all out efforts to nab the accused, but the police could find no clue on her movements. The family members of Lakshmi were taken into custody in an effort to pressurize the accused to come out of her hiding.

Lakshmi is being questioned by police before presenting her in the court. Those who helped her all these days in hiding will also be booked, said police.
