Yesteryear actress and dancer Jyothilakshmi died in Chennai on Tuesday.

Chennai: Yesteryear actress and dancer Jyothilakshmi died in Chennai on Tuesday.

She acted in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and a handful of Hindi movies making up more than 300 films. Her popular Telugu movies included Pilla? Piduga? (1972), Gandharva Kanya (1979), Donga Ramudu & Party (2003), Bangaru Babu (2009) and Sita Ramulu (1980) besides the ANR hit Premnagar.

Songs and dance numbers of the 70s and 80s were composed specifically for her.

During her heyday, directors used to queue up to cast her in their movies. Her dance numbers were considered mandatory in the movies of the 1980s and early 90s, with several “item songs of the 70s and 80s” written specifically for her.

In the early 1970s, she was well noted for her leading roles and songs in movies. She also has acted in female-oriented movies and is a trained dancer. Her debut was in the film “Periya Idathu Penn” in 1963. Her sister Jayamalini was also a popular dancer and actor.
