Hyderabad People Opting for Low-Grade Onions As Price Hits Rs 200

HYDERABAD: With the prices of onions skyrocketing, average households here are left with the no choice but to buy low-grade onions only. Due to this households, eateries and many restaurants are scrambling for substitutes.

Did you notice why hotels and eateries are not providing onions in salads and any other dishes?  To answer that we need to know that there are mainly three types of onions. Grade-1 quality onions, which are imported from Maharashtra's Solapur. The prices of the Solapur onions have touched Rs 200/kg. Grade-II quality onions are imported from Karnataka and grade-III onions are imported from Kurnool and Mahbubnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Though traders procure the grade-I onions at a rate of around Rs 140-150 per kilo from the markets in the likes Malakpet and Bowenpally, however by the time they reach consumers and hotels, the price soars to Rs 200. Restaurants are forced to cut down the usage of onions due to this reason.

The price of Grade-II onions is bit lower than that of Grade-I. So citizens of Hyderabad are opting for Grade-II and Grade-III onions for household consumption.

The prices are expected to come down once the Egyptian onions reach the markets of the city. According to earlier reports, onions were expected to be imported to Hyderabad by the second week of December. Till then its tears for all till the prices subside.
