High Court Bans Sankranti Cockfights In AP

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday banned cockfights in Andhra Pradesh. Hearing a petition seeking a ban on the cockfights which use cocks in violent methods finally leading to their death, the court issued orders to the government to abolish the game.

The petitioner People for Animals pleaded that the birds are are used in cockfights for betting and knives will be tied as part of competition. Ultimately, one of the two birds will be killed, which is a violation of animal rights, it argued.

Following the High Court order, the AP police conducted raids on suspected cockfight organizers in the capital region area and seized 40 cocks from the operators. Three persons were also in Mangalagiri.
