HC serious on mortgaging of 2 daughters for loan

The High Court viewed seriously the incident where a couple mortgaged their two daughters in lieu of the loan of Rs 35,000 they had vowed from a money-lender.

Unable to re-pay the loan, the couple from Machareddy village in Nizamabad district mortgaged their two daughters as banded labour to Zahangir of Mythapur in Karimnagar district. 

Following the news reports, the High Court considered the incident as suo moto PIL. The Government Chief Secretary, principal secretary of Home Department, secretary of women and child welfare department, Deputy General of Police, Karimnagar District Collector, Jagityala RDO, Karimnagar Superintendent of Police, Commissioner of Labour Department and money-lender Zahangir were mentioned in the PIL as defendants. The case is likely to come up for hearing in the next week.
