Goa Govt says No to BJP's Good Governance Day
The BJP-ruled Goa will not celebrate the Good Governance Day on December 24, an initiative promoted by the Bharatiya Janata Party. The reason? Because December 25 is Christmas and the significant Christian population in Goa will be celebrating the festival with full religious fervour. The Goa chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar announced this in the assembly.
When questioned by MLA Vijai Sardesai if December 25 would be observed as "Good Governance Day" the chief minister said "No decision in this matter has been taken" The 'Good Governance Day' is a nation-wide initiative of Narendra Modi-led NDA government as a mark of respect for Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee whose birthday falls on December 25.
Goa, a former Portugese Colony, has a significant 26 per cent of Christians. In deference to the sentiments of the Christian community, the Goa government has decided not to observe the day. Parsekar had said "We have informed our High Command that we will be unable to observe Good Governance Day onDecember 25. But we will do it before or after that day."
