Cyclone Vardah’s Kiss of Destruction in Chennai, Nellore

- Severe conditions along Chennai-Nellore coast as Cyclone Vardah made its landfall at Pulicat. Strong winds, massive damage and heavy rainfall marked the crossing of Cyclone Eye. The conditions remained severe between Chennai and Nellore
- The northern prong of cyclone Vardah hits the north of Chennai; heavy rains and high speed winds are expected to continue for the next eight to twelve hours.
- Cyclone Vardah causes massive damage in parts of Chennai as heavy rainfall and storm results in uprooting of trees
- The sub-urban railway network has been suspended till further notice. Some trains that are reaching and leaving Chennai have been diverted and cancelled. The Chennai division of southern railway has beed badly affected according to senior officials camping at stations and control rooms. Flight operations at the airport here have been suspended till 6 PM.
- Two persons killed as heavy rains and high velocity winds pounded Chennai
- Power supply suspended in many parts of Chennai.
- As many as 260 trees and 37 electric poles had fallen and 190 tress removed. As many 224 roads were blocked and 24 huts damaged.
- Wind speed is around 100-110 km/hour. Chennai recorded maximum wind speed of 192 Km/hour.
