Cyber Criminals Dupe Hyderabadi Of Rs 40K Using Chutneys, Ohris Names 

HYDERABAD: A man from Srinagar Colony was swindled of Rs 40,000 by a fake food delivery app named 'Food Road Delivery,' here on Sunday. What was shocking was that they used the name of two prominent restaurants - Chutneys and Ohris while trying to trap customers.

According the City Cyber Crime police, the victim had seen an advertisement in the name of Chutney's and Ohris on Facebook. A phone number was given in the ad, which said that they would deliver the food from these restaurants home if you place an order through the phone number given in it. He called the number and the criminals who took orders from him said they would send a Google page for the payment and asked him to fill it for registering with them. After registering they said they would deliver the food after he paid the cash through online transfer. The unsuspecting victim then filled in the page with the bank account details along with the One Time Password (OTP). The cyber criminals then swindled Rs.40,000 from the victim's account. The case was reported to the city's cybercrime police on Sunday.

In another case in the city, cyber criminals swindled Rs 64,000 from another person in Chikkadapalli area through a groceries app that he was buying essentials online from. The second victim had paid certain amount upfront in the grocery app without needing to make payments from net banking whenever time he needed to purchase goods. Upon checking his account recently, he found Rs 20,000 missing.

Shocked to find the amount missing he called the call center number which he retrieved from details mentioned from the app details in Google Play store. When he called the number the criminals posing as managers said that in order for them to return the amount to his account, they said he would have to send an SMS to a particular phone number which they would send.

Believing them, the man sent the SMS to the cyber criminals' phone. This SMS had given them direct access to his bank account as it was related to the UPI link. The cyber criminals withdrew Rs. 64,000 from the victim's account. The victim, realizing that he was duped after getting an SMS of his account being debited of the said amount, filed a complaint with the city's cyber crime police on Sunday.

The City Cyber Crime officials are investigating both the cases.
