Five Migrant Labourers Fall To Death At Keesara Govt  Housing Site

Hyderabad: Five migrant workers working at a State government’s double bedroom housing project site died after falling from the 10th floor on Thursday. The building site is located behind the Infosys office in Rampally village , Keesara mandal near Hyderabad.

The victims were identified as Sibel Roy (33), Saiful Haq (27), Abhijit Roy (18) and Milan Sheik (20) from West Bengal, and Yash Kumar (20) from Jharkhand . Another person Biplav Roy (18) who is critical is being treated in a private hospital in Uppal.

At around 11:30 AM, the workers were standing on the scaffolding of the 12th tower (Block 12) and removing an iron sheet with the help of a crane. The scaffolding gave way and all six persons standing on the structure fell to the ground.  While three of them died on the spot with multiple fractures and injuries to the head, two of them died while being shifted to a hospital in a pick-up van which was there at the site. The workers weren't wearing any safety gear or harness at that time of the incident. Another point to be noted is that most of the workers there who are migrant labourers were not provided any specific safety gear when they are working in high rise constructions except for a plastic helmet.

Angered by the death of their co workers, the labourers at the site went on a rampage and attacked the office premises. They broke the glasses, computers, chairs and other office equipment. Police were called in to bring the situation under control.

Compensation

The DEC Infrastructure and Projects (India) Pvt. Ltd is executing the housing project which has 52 towers, with 120 flats in each block. Over 1,600 workers are working round-the-clock to complete the construction by July this year. An ex-gratia of ₹15 lakh, including ₹ 2 lakh from GHMC and ₹8 lakh insurance from the construction company will be sanctioned to the kin of each victim.

AE Suspended

GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore issued orders for the suspension of the Assistant Engineer S Narsaraju for negligence while on duty and failing to take proper precautions for the safety of workers.

Cause of the Accident

Inspector B Prakash said that a crane which was lifting the iron sheet experienced a jerk, which caused imbalance and the workers to fall. "A case has been registered and we are investigating to find out whether there were any safety measures in place and also to ascertain the exact reason for the accident, he said. Their bodies were shifted to the Gandhi hospital morgue for post mortem.
