Vijayawada: A police constable, deputed for Pushkaram duty, was killed on Friday in a road accident at Gudavalli village near here.

He was crossing the National Highway-16 when a speeding car knocked him down, at Gudavalli village.

The deceased identified as Venkata Rao, 50, hailing from Rajampet in Kadapa district, was deployed here for Krishna Pushkaram duty. He was crossing the National Highway-16 when a speeding car knocked him down. Rao, attached to the Armed Reserve, was rushed to the Pinnamaneni Medical College and hospital at Peda Avutapalli where he succumbed during treatment, police said.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to his family.
