Fearing HIV Infection, Doctor Commits Suicide
Guntur: A doctor committed suicide, on Thursday, fearing that she might have been infected after a surgery to a HIV positive patient.
The doctor, Vijayalakshmi (24), was a PG student of general surgery at Guntur Medical College. Police officials stated that Vijayalakshmi had gone into a depression about three weeks ago when she participated in a surgery to a HIV positive patient. At that time she sustained a needle prick and feared she too might have been infected, police said.
The doctor feared that a needle prick during the surgery might have resulted in HIV infection to her.
She has been on preventive medicine since then but as she was suffering from diarrhea during the past two days, she must have further slipped into depression and resorted to the extreme step, police opine.
The post-mortem was performed on Friday, prior to handing over of the body to her relatives.
