CBI Questions KCR Over ESI Buildings

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in an investigation related to low quality construction of Employees State Insurance (ESI) hospitals when he was a Union Minister in 2006.The contract for such buildings is generally given to the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), a central government undertaking. However, the Ministry of Labour under KCR allotted the contract to an executive engineer of the then Andhra Pradesh Fisheries Department. Following complaints about the quality of construction of hospital buildings, the ESI ordered an inquiry into the issue and the executive engineer Suryanarayana who monitored the contract was found to have accumulated properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. It was found that a uge loss to the government exchequer took place in this whole issue. An FIR was filed against the engineer.

As part of the investigation, the CBI had alreday completed questioning KCR's then private secretary and controller of finance. The CBI slueths have questioned KCR last Monday.
