Amaravati: Several people were feared drowned when a tourist boat capsized in the swollen Godavari river in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday afternoon while over 27 passengers were said to have been rescued, police sources said.

The exact details of the mishap and the number of persons in the ill-fated boat were not immediately available.

The river has been in spate for the past few days and over 5.13 lakh cusecs of floodwater was flowing on Sunday afternoon when the mishap occurred.

"We are trying to ascertain the details," East Godavari District Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi told PTI.

Sources said there were about 60 people, including 11 crew members, in the boat run by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.

The boat started off for the picturesque Papikondalu, a prime tourist destination, from Gandi Pochamma Temple near Devipatnam and it capsized near Kachhuluru, the sources said.

State Chief Secretary L V Subrahmanyam spoke to East Godavari District Collector Muralidhar Reddy and enquired about the incident.

The Chief Secretary directed that a helicopter be pressed into service to trace the boat mishap victims.

Police and other rescue teams have started off from East and West Godavari districts for the accident spot, but it could take some time for them to reach there because of the swollen state of the river, official sources said.

The Andhra Pradesh government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin in boat tragedy.

On the wake of boat capsized incident near Devipatnam of East Godavari District,Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered to stop all the boat services on rivers in the state with immediate effect, He further ordered officials to inspect the licences of the boat crew. He also asked officials to form and expert committee to suggest guidelines to permit the boats.

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced Rs 10 lakh as ex-gratia to the families of the victims who died in the boat tragedy that took place near Devipatnam in East Godavaridistrict on Sunday.

In the wake of where a tourist boat with more than 61 passengers capsized near Devipatnam of East Godavari District, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy called for an emergency meeting with officials and ordered to stop all the boat services on rivers in the state with immediate effect.

PM Modi Expresses Grief Over Boat Tragedy

New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the boat tragedy in Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari district.

Taking to twitter, He said "Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the tragedy."

KCR Expresses Shock Over AP Boat Tragedy

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has expressed shock over the boat tragedy that occurred near Papikondalu in East Godavari District.

CM has conveyed his deep condolences to the members of the bereaved families.

Since there were people from Telangana among those who lost their lives, CM has instructed officials concerned to take the necessary action.
