Visakhapatnam Kidney Racket: Hospital Sealed On Collector’s Orders

Visakhapatnam: In connection to the alleged illegal organ transplantation which took place in Sraddha Hospital, the three-member committee investigating the case have submitted its report to District Collector K Bhaskar on Saturday.

After reviewing the report, the District Collector has directed the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) S Tirupathi Rao to seal the hospital with immediate effect.

As per the details, the Sraddha Hospital performed more than 60 kidney transplants so far and among those, 29 were reported as illegal.

According to the report submitted by the committee members, several illegal transplantations were undertaken in the hospital. The District Collector has directed the three-member committee to investigate the transplants performed in private hospitals across Visakhapatnam and submit a comprehensive report within 15 days.

The three-member committee comprising the District Medical & Health Officer (DMHO), District Co-Ordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) and the Superintendent of King George Hospital (KGH) will examine the organ transplantations performed in private hospitals across the city in the past five years.

On May 8, two doctors were arrested for their alleged involvement in an organ transplant racket, which took place a year ago. The doctors, M Manjunath (34), an Ayurvedic doctor from Bengaluru, and D Prabhakar (35) were arrested on the charges of illegal transplantation of kidney.

The incident came to light after the complainant, who is an organ donor approached the police claiming that he was not paid the promised money.
