National Green Tribunal Inspect Polavaram Project
West Godavari: As per the directives of the Supreme Court, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Committee members inspected the Polavaram project site on Thursday where muck and waste are being dumped illegally.
They interacted with villagers and locals officials to elicit their opinions. The inspection is basically carried out after a complaint was lodged with the NGT that muck and waste are being dumped illegally wherever possible. As the issue is expected to come up for hearing before the apex court on May 10, the Committee members visited the site.
The issue came to light after one Pentapati Pulla Rao alleged that illegal dumping of much was taking place in the vicinity of Indira Sagar Polavaram Multipurpose Project and was putting the environment in jeopardy.
Touted as the “lifeline of Andhra Pradesh”, it was accorded the National Project status under the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. Despite the tall claims made by the TDP government to complete the project in three years after ascending to power in 2014, the project is progressing far beyond the foundations. The State government has time and again escalated the costs in the last five years. The YSR Congress Party has been at the forefront of exposing the rampant corruption vis-à-vis Polavaram project that the ruling party is indulging in at cost of State exchequer.
