Profile: Kavali Constituency In Sri Pottisriramulu, Nellore
Kavali constituency is one of the ten seats in Sri Pottisriramulu Nellore district, and is currently held by Ramireddy Pratap Kumar Reddy of the YSR Congress Party. Overcoming the hurdles posed by the ruling TDP has been a challenge for Opposition legislators and yet, he has become popular among the masses for his sincerity in standing by them.
During the course of his mass contact initiative, Praja Sankalpa Yatra, Leader of Opposition in AP assembly, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, passed by these parts in February 2018. He interacted extensively with people of the area and gained a first-hand insight into their day-to-day lives under the TDP regime.
Kavali faces numerous problems in spite of the fact that it is located on a fertile coastal strip. Drinking water supply has been a problem for a long time especially in the scorching summer months.
The Somasila project which is yet to be completed, is a major irrigation project and the Kavali canal is one of the main sources of irrigation for farmers in the region. People of Kavali also rely on the canal for drinking water supply.
Fishermen in the region are beset with problems. They have to contend with inevitable destruction caused by natural calamities. Added to this is the weak organisational network of fishermen cooperatives, inefficient transportation facilities, poor understanding of marketing system, lack of storage facilities add to their problems. Government support has been hardly forthcoming.
During the course of his Praja Sankalpa Yatra, YS Jagan had assured the fishermen and farmers of this region of justice and prompt measure to improve their lot, under the YSRCP.
The YSR Congress Party has an advantage in the upcoming elections as it faces off against a TDP which is facing a massive wave of anti-incumbency. The Telugu Desam Party did not announce its Kavali candidate in the first list of 126 candidates.
