YSR's Praja Prasthanam turns 10 years
YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s historical marathon padayatra “Praja Prasthanam” completed 10 years on Tuesday.
Late YSR had spearheaded a movement in support of farmers, poor and the middle class people when the state was reeling under severe crisis during the TDP regime. Acute drought conditions made the life miserable to lakhs of people from one end to the other in the State. The government made all efforts to suppress the agitation launched against power charges hike using police force. YS Rajasekhar Reddy, the then opposition leader who felt the necessary of meeting the people to understand the ground realities and console them in the wake of unprecedented drought conditions prevailed in the State.
The marathon foot march began after paying rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi statue at Somajiguda, Dr B R Ambedkar statue at Tank Bun and Mahatma Gandhi statue at Assembly. YSR reached Chevella in Rangareddy district where he addressed mammoth public meeting. He walked through the villages, towns and cities restlessly in the mid summer despite all the hurdles and completed 1400 kms of walk. The padayatra can be described as a beginning of new era in the history of the state.
To mark the occasion, YSR Congress party organised state-wide programmes on Tuesday. At some places, the party workers performed special ritual “Palabhishekam” pouring milk on the YSR statue.Continuing the legacy of his father, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had too embarked on "Odarpu yatra" and toured nook and corner of the State.
Later, his sister Sharmila is continuing the “Praja Prasthanam” in the name of "Maro praja Prasthanam" following the footsteps of her father to understand the people’s hardships and is consoling the people who were facing similar drought situation that prevailed in 2003.
