Brain-Eating Amoeba Enters Body Of 10-year-old Girl While Swimming

A young girl is battling for her life after a brain-eating amoeba entered her body while swimming in Brazos river and Lake Whitney in Bosque Country near Waco in the US.

According to media reports, the 10-year-old girl had complained of a headache which followed fever and doctors said that she had come in contact with Naegleria fowleri or a "brain-eating amoeba" while swimming.

A facebook page was created to support the girl and narrating her story, her parents said that they became suspicious when the girl had trouble sleeping and also had nightmares.

She is currently in an ICU at Cook Childrens Medical Center Pediatric hospital where she is receiving treatment.

What are the brain-eating amoebas?

Amoebas are single-celled organisms and these species were discovered in 1965. They are generally found in warm freshwaters and enters the body through nose or mouth and travels to the brain and destroys the tissues.

The symptons are fever, headache, altered mental state, hallucinations, coma, blurred vision, among others,

The disease has in general 97 percent fatality rate and the right treatment is not clear. However, two people after being treated with a new drug miltefosine had survived the infection, according to a report.
