Hyderabad: A 24-year-old woman received a new lease of life after an operation transplanting another heart in her was successful at Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad.

The operation was carried out on June 15, the same day the donor was declared brain-dead after an accident. The operation lasted over nine hours, was carried out after convincing relatives of 47-year-old brain dead man to donate the organ.

Last three years were a tough time for me and my son who is too young to understand the tough time she went through. It was very painful for me to see my wife gasping for breath every day

Aruna who is beaming with smile says that now she can make up for that time she lost with her three-year-old son Karthik.

Aruna, residing in Pune came to hospital three- months back wherein the doctors said that she was fighting end-stage heart failure disease

Along with Aruna, her husband Gopala Krishna a software engineer expressing the joy over the successful operation said, “Last three years were a tough time for me and my son who is too young to understand the tough time she went through. It was very painful for me to see my wife gasping for breath every day.”

Aruna, residing in Pune came to hospital three- months back wherein the doctors said that she was fighting end-stage heart failure disease.

“It was found that this problem affected women during final months of pregnancy and up to five months after delivery. While its incidence is low effecting 1 in 1,000 women, it does result in high mortality rate of up to 32 percent,“ said Dr P V Naresh Kumar, senior heart transplant surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals.
