Tamil actor Vijay's latest release Mersal opened to packed houses on Diwali and ever since there's no looking back as the film has kept the cash registers ringing at the Box Office. With a collection of Rs 34 crore from the domestic market alone while the overseas collections have been put at Rs 17 crore, the film is on a roll. Directed by Atlee, the film stars Nithya Menen, Samantha Akkineni and Kajal Aggarwal as the leading ladies.

However, not all seems to be well with the film. The film has been caught up in some controversy or the other ever since it was announced. The film's release itself was doubtful as the Tamil Nadu Producers' Council did not want any films released in protest against the double taxation.

Also, Producer A Rajendran had filed a petition against the makers of Mersal over the film's title stating he had the rights to use Mersalaiyitten which was eventually dismissed by the Madras High Court.

The CBFC clearance itself came a day before the release of Mersal over the use of animals in the film. Meanwhile, pro-Kannada groups protested against the huge cut-outs of Vijay being erected outside a theatre in Bengaluru. They had also called for a ban on the movie release.

The film however, did see the light of the day. But just when the fans of actor were celebrating its success came a state from BJP's Tamil Nadu President, Tamilisai Sounderrajan who asked for GST and Digital India references to be removed as they were misleading.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu doctors too are upset over being portrayed in poor light in the film. Yet, despite all these the film has become the second highest grossing film on Day 1 after Bahubali 2.

It now remains to be seen if the makers will remove the suggested content from the film.
