Vijayawada commissionerate to be upgraded ?
Vijayawada police commissionerate will soon be upgraded. Till now, an IPS officer of the rank of DIG has been acting as the commissioner and now an IPS officer of the rank of Additional DGP will head the city police.
According to sources, the related proposals have already reached the Union Home Ministry.
Similarly, Guntur Urban Police, which is spread out in 30 sq.km, will be upgraded to the level of DIG office and be made the police commissionerate soon.
Urban police district will be formed in Eluru too by separating it from West Godavari district.
If all these proposals are accepted, Vijayawada will emerge as a key city for policing in Andhra Pradesh.
Union Home Ministry is doing its exercise to provide security arrangements at Vijayawada city commissionerate at the level of Hyderabad city.
As the camp office of the chief minister is going to be located at the campus of Acharya Nagarjuna University, the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate will be upgraded to the level of Additional DGP.
Senior IPS officials have already started their lobbying to get the key posting in Vijayawada. As per the sources, senior IPS officer N.V.Surendra Babu is the frontrunner in the race. Other names doing the rounds are Umesh Shroff, A.B.Venkateswara Rao and others.
In the new state, Vijayawada city is likely to emerge as a key one. An airport, Hi-Tec city, Indrakeeladri Temple, a big railway junction and others are located here. Several proposals reached the union home ministry to increase the security in the city.
Further, several state level offices may be located nearer to the city. Police personnel in large number are needed to provide security to all of them. As per the reports, the strength of the police personnel in the city will be doubled.
Several adjoining areas will also be merged in the upgraded commissionerate.
Vijayawada urban police district was formed in 18 May 1983. K.S.Vyas worked as the first chief of the urban district. There are already some proposals to upgrade the city commissionerate.
Guntur urban police district was formed in 2010. As per the earlier plan, the police commissionerate has to be formed here in 2016. But, it may be formed before 2016 only. An IPS officer of the rank of DIG will take over as the commissioner here. Two IPS officers will be posted in the commissionerate as deputy commissioners.
