Unfazed by Brexit, Amazon to generate 1,000 new jobs in UK
London: Amazon.com Inc, the world’s biggest retailer by market value, has decided to create 1,000 permanent new jobs across the UK. This is in addition to the 2,500 new posts the online retail giant announced earlier this year. With addition of new jobs, the total number of permanent UK employees at Amazon will be over 15,500 by end of 2016. Amazon will recruit for the new jobs mainly in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Manchester and Leicestershire.
Responding to the likely impact of Brexit on the UK retail segment, Amazon said said it was not changing any plans as a result of Brexit. Doug Gurr, head of Amazon UK, said: “Our sales are in line with expectations. It’s business as usual as far as we are concerned. We don’t know what the impact will be. As far as we’re concerned right now, we’re keeping our heads down and continuing to do what we do. We’ll deal with whatever situation arises.”
Amazon will add 3,500 new jobs in 2016 alone. With addition of new jobs, the total number of permanent UK employees at Amazon will be over 15,500 by end of 2016. Amazon will recruit for the new jobs mainly in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Manchester and Leicestershire.
Gurr said: “We are creating thousands of new jobs to continue to deliver the experience our customers know and love during the festive season and beyond. We are hiring for all types of roles from software engineers, computer programmers and corporate managers in our R&D centers and head office, to operations managers, engineers, service technicians, HR roles and order fulfillment roles in our fulfillment centers.”
