TRS MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha came to rescue of Indian workers returning from Kuwait as the Kuwait Amnesty date comes to a close on February 22.

On Tuesday, 9 workers reached Shamshabad airport from Kuwait and the MP through her NGO - Telangana Jagruthi - arranged for their safe return. Telangana Jagruthi through its programme 'Jagruthi - Cheyutha' arranged for the safe return of Indian workers who had no money to fly back to India.

It may be recalled that the Kuwait government announced a special amnesty to thousands of Indian workers forced to illegally extend their stay in the Gulf country due to non-payment of salaries. The amnesty has been granted from January 29 to February 22, that is no penalties would be imposed during this period on the workers for their stay. The penalty for overstaying in Kuwait is two Kuwaiti Dinars, i.e. Indian Rs 424, per day. The unpaid workers, who had overstayed by several months, could not afford to pay the fine.

The amnesty granted by the Kuwaiti government comes in the wake of Union minister of state for external affairs VK Singh’s recent visit to the country. Singh had taken up the issue of the workers who had not been paid by Kharafi National Company. He also spoke to a Kuwaiti minister to waive penalty for those who wanted to return to India.

Meanwhile, Telangana Jagruthi general secretary Naveen Achari was at hand to personally receive the workers at Shamshabad airport on Tuesday evening.
