Train Passengers Now Get Rs10 Lakh Travel Cover For Re1 If Tickets Booked on IRCTC

New Delhi: Train passengers booking their tickets online on the IRCTC website will be offered travel insurance cover for a premium of just Re1 from September.
The travelers or their families will get compensation up to Rs10 lakh in the event of death or permanent total disability, Rs7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to Rs2 lakh for hospitalization expenses and Rs 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains in the event of death or injury in a train accident or incidents such as terrorist attacks, dacoity, rioting, shoot-out or arson.
All passengers who book e-tickets on IRCTC website irrespective of the class of the ticket can opt for insurance cover. The facility won’t cover suburban trains.
IRCTC is partnering with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Royal Sundaram and Shriram General. These three companies, selected out of 19 participants in the bidding process, will get insurance policy on a rotation basis. The providers are selected for a period of one year with the provision of extending the contract based on performance.
Unlike different facilities for passengers of different classes, the insurance cover is uniform for all and the option will be made available through a checkbox at the time of e-ticket booking. The premium amount of Re1 will be added to the ticket fare after the passenger opts for insurance.
