Thundurru Tense After Villagers Arrested For Protesting Against Aquapark
Eluru: Scores of men and women were arrested when they were protesting against the construction of an aqua foods park at Thundurru in West Godavari district on Wednesday.
As the protest was planned by villagers, the police lay seize to the village right in the morning and Section 144 was imposed prohibiting public gathering in and around Thundurru. The leaders of YSR Congress Party and CPM were house arrested and warned of action if they came out of their homes in Bhimavaram, Narsapur and Pallakollu.
However, daring police repression, hundreds of men and women came on the streets to take out a rally against the factory. Police took them into custody and shifted them to police stations.
While the people are opposing the aqua park saying it will cause serious pollution problems in the area, especially to the hatcheries and their traditional fish business, the government claims that the factory was being built strictly according to pollution control board guidelines and laying a pipeline to release the pollutants into the sea.
